WORDS TO LIVE BY

Do not pray for a lighter load, but for a stronger back.

“Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence continually!”  I Chronicles 16:11

Find out where you can render a service; then render it.  The rest is up to God. (S.S. Kresge)

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people…”  Galatians 6:10(a)

No time is lost when you are waiting on God.

“Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him.”  Psalm 37:7(a)

Progress involves risks.  You can’t steal second and keep your foot on first.  (Frederick Wilcox)

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”  Proverbs 29:18(a)

Please Welcome our
Newest Member

Paul Larrabee has been attending
First Christian for some time along
with Nancy Merrill, his new wife, and this past Sunday came forward to make his declaration
of faith and place his membership with this church family.
Paul will be baptized in our worship service next Sunday.
If you have not already done so, please welcome Paul personally.

A Pastoral Word on Our Election

We received this e-mail last week and I thought we should share it with you.  I can hear Rev. Long preaching
these words as I read them.  Amen!

Rev. Osgood

Congratulations to all who participated in the electoral
process!  You have exercised a precious right and made
a mark in history regardless of the candidate you chose from the President to the Local District Offices.

We are one country that stands as a beacon for democracy,
not because of who won or lost, but because of the way we exercise the just ways and means in the conduct of our democracy.

THE DECISIONS & CHOICES HAVE BEEN MADE!

The sun still shines and the world still revolves on its axis,
so there is much work ahead!  In the meantime...take a
moment to give thanks and appreciate the privilege of participating and living in such a time as this!

I’ve always been proud to be an American of the
United States and now the world knows why as our
country’s ultimate election and transition of government culminated last night …marked by the civility of Senator
John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin and the humility of Senators Barak Obama and Joe Biden!

We all have a stake in putting our country first and
participating in the change we need that’s all based on the words engrained on the coinage of our economy….IN GOD WE TRUST!     Peace, Sotello V. Long, Regional Church Pastor

Evangelism/Serendipity News

We had a wonderful breakfast and planning meeting on Sunday morning with a great turn-out—14 people of ALL ages!  There was great enthusiasm for many new plans and you will be hearing more on these ideas in the near future.  God is clearly blessing our efforts.  Thanks to all who helped with breakfast:  Carolyn McLean, Angie Sisk, Christy Beach, Steve Bates, and Nancy Raley.

Chuck Clary reminds all members of
the board of the meeting this Sunday,
November 16, 12:15 pm

Please come to hear reports and vote on several important matters.

Please Help Me Decorate for Christmas!
by Angie Sisk

Please come join in and help decorate the sanctuary for Christmas! Be at the church on Saturday, November 29,
at 9:00 am to prepare for the coming of the Christ child by hanging wreaths, bows, and setting up the Christmas tree.
Many hands make lighter work. Please come help! I promise we will be done by noon.

Thanksgiving DMF Offering

Looking for a safe investment?   For two centuries, Disciples colleges and universities have trained Disciples leaders to think clearly and rationally and to minister to the world around them. While those first instructors and students might not recognize modern campuses, those classic values live on in the 21st Century.

Disciples undergraduate institutions serve nearly 27,000 students in a wide variety of settings – from a rural college town with several hundred students to a metropolitan setting with almost 9,000 students. Despite those differences, these schools all share a commitment to the church, emphasize spiritual faith and values, and cherish a commitment to a liberal-arts education.

Your gift to the Thanksgiving Special Offering supports the training of our church’s emerging leaders – an investment in our church’s future.  The offering will be received on November 16 and 23.  We hope to have a special guest delivering a “Minute for Missions” on November 16 during the service of worship.

Trailblazers Sunday School Christmas Gathering

Hal and Kathy Guyon are hosting the annual Trailblazers Christmas party at their home on Sunday evening, December 7, at 6:00.  The Guyons are providing the meat, bread, and drink and ask that you bring a covered-dish.  Don’t forget to bring a $5 gift for the “Greed Game.”  Please let Hal or Kathy know if you plan to come and sign up for a vegetable or dessert.

Thank You So Much!

o   Dot Rabon sends her thanks to all of you who called, sent notes or cards, and expressed sympathy to her during the illness and at the death of “Uncle E.C.” Please continue to pray for his wife, Myna.

o   Palmetto Place thanks us for the generous support of their mission.  The $100.00 gift will assist their meeting the daily needs of the children who temporarily live at the Emergency Shelter until other arrangements can be made for their care with family members or foster parents.

Honor Flight Heroes

On Saturday, November 15, Louie Crouch
will be one of 91 veterans from South
Carolina who will be on the inaugural Honor
Flight to the nation’s capital to visit the
National World War II Memorial.  This flight
is full, but local organizers hope to raise
$300,000 to charter a total of six flights to take
600 veterans to Washington for free over
the next year or so.  What an honor, Louie!
We know your trip will be awesome and
we thank you for your service.

News from Disciples Schools

Lynchburg College will host "Step Out and Serve:  A Global Gala" to help provide humanitarian relief to the people of Haiti, St. Lucia, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, and Rwanda.  The gala will take place on the evening of Nov. 15 and feature exhibits, food, music, a fundraising pledge drive and service opportunities.  It will cost $25 for general admission and $10 for students.

Jarvis Christian College has been awarded a $1.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation.  The grant will be used to assist Jarvis students who are majoring in biology, chemistry or mathematics.  The NSF money, which will be disbursed to the Hawkins, Texas, college through 2012, will also be used to support undergraduate research in science and math.

The NSF grant will be available to Jarvis juniors and seniors.  In addition, the students selected to receive the scholarships will be obligated to complete a stint as a faculty-supervised lab assistant in their discipline during a minimum of two first-year lab periods.

Pacific School of Religion has joined Disciples Seminary Foundation in acquiring University Christian Church, a history-rich church located across the street from the Berkeley (CA) seminary.  University Christian Church was built in 1931.  University Christian held its final service in February 2007.  The church site is now known as the Ecumenical Center of Berkeley.  From the beginning, PSR students attended church there, and Jack Finegan, University Christian's longest serving pastor, taught Old Testament classes at PSR for 30 years.
